SMH Weekends Away: Cupitt’s Cottage27 October 2012

The location

Cupitt’s Winery, a working vineyard and farm, lies in the lush hinterland of Ulladulla, in the family-holiday triangle that includes the village of Milton and the beach haven of Mollymook, on the south coast of NSW. The beaches, to suit both paddlers and surfers, are a huge drawcard, but so too is the relaxed pace of this coastal enclave.

The place

Home for the weekend is a simple two-bedroom self-contained slab cottage. It sleeps four and has a double bed and two singles that can be made up into a king-size bed. Original features, such as the casuarina roof shingles and fireplace, were retained during a simple but sympathetic renovation. The sturdy 100-year-old cottage is attractively and practically furnished, light floods the cheery bedrooms and the whole place is geared for comfort. A large deck off the living room is a welcome suntrap and the perfect spot to sit with a cup of tea or later, a glass of wine.

The experience

Winemaker Rosie Cupitt’s wines are available for tasting in the gorgeous stone cellar door and there is a restaurant too, with an outdoor pizza oven. Venture into Milton for shopping – antiques and homewares are standouts – and take a dip at either Mollymook or Narrawallee beaches. Need more action? You can kayak or water ski on nearby Lake Burrill or scale the summit of Pigeon House Mountain.

Don’t miss

Exploring Ulladulla Harbour is a highlight. See working fishing trawlers close up, walk out over the breakwater, take a dip in the sea pool, or hike to Warden Head Lighthouse on the southern headland. With all this sea air, you’ll work up an appetite. Pop into Ulladulla Oyster Bar (0419 219 275) for fresh-shucked oysters and a glass of bubbles, or buy a bag to take home. barbara sweeney
