Cupitt’s Winery retain the 5 Star Rating4 August 2018 – posted in: Winery, Uncategorized

Congratulations to Wally Cupitt and the team for retaining their 5-star Winery rating in the Halliday Wine Companion 2019. Halliday Wine Companion is recognised as the industry benchmark for Australian wine.
The 2016 Nebbiolo achieved 5 Red Glasses and a rating of 97 points
‘Hand-picked, destemmed, the whole berries wild yeast open-fermented, matured for 11 months in used oak, 80% French, 20% Hungarian. Nebbiolo is the ultimate red wine challenge, but Hilltops has had a record of (relative) success. Rosie Cupitt has done it again, holding her nerve and her palate during the long (2 week) primary ferment and 8 week post-ferment maceration, aligning herself with old Barolo practice, not the new, short maceration. This has every sort of cherry you wish to nominate, and lingering fine, savoury tannins. A terrific wine.’
Wines receiving 95 points were
2015 Dusty Dog Shiraz
‘Co-fermented with 2% viognier, 30% whole bunches, 70% whole berries, wild yeast open-fermented, 28 days on skins, 12 months in French oak (25% new). A lovely wine, with a complex, shifting array of aromas that are brought to heel on the vital, fresh, medium-bodied palate with its Thai silk range of predominantly red fruits criss-crossed by superfine tannins and bright acidity.’
2016 Merlot
‘Whole berries wild yeast open-fermented, 2 weeks post-ferment maceration, 35 days on skins, 11 months in French oak (35% new). The bright colour and aromatic bouquet are full of the promise that is largely delivered by the medium to full-bodied palate. Cassis, bay leaf and char are occupants of the mid-palate, the only faint whisper, a touch of bitterness on the aftertaste. The sheer quality of the makeup of the rest of the wine, and the inanity of most merlots, drives me to gold medal status.’
